The future of Western Cape aviation is taking off right here at our doorstep. We recently opened our hangar doors at our Cape Winelands Airport base for the ultimate Helivate Open Day. Our mission? To bring aspiring student pilots, seasoned hour builders, and local aviation enthusiasts face-to-face with the incredible reality of the helicopter industry. With a massive influx of local school students and high-energy crowds, the day was an absolute masterclass in aviation community and inspiration.
An Elite Lineup: Industry Heavyweights Under One Roof
We didn’t just want to showcase our own operation—we wanted to show the full scale of what a career in the skies looks like. We were incredibly proud to invite some of South Africa’s top aviation innovators to display alongside us:
- Cape Town Helicopters: The team brought out their striking Airbus AS365 Dauphin in its official offshore rescue configuration. Getting up close to this legendary twin-engine machine gave everyone a real taste of high-stakes maritime search and rescue operations.
- Leading Edge Aviation: As massive players in the aerial firefighting sector, they sent one of their highly experienced pilots to talk shop, telling gripping stories of dropping water on mountain blazes and what it takes to fly on the front lines.
- Exam Revolution: Ground school is where great pilots are made. The Exam Revolution team was on-site demonstrating their cutting-edge theoretical training tools, showing students exactly how to smash their SACAA exams with confidence.
Flight Training Cape Town: Inspiring the Next Generation
Ahead of the event, the Helivate team reached out to local high schools across the region to advise them about the event. The response was overwhelming. An exceptional wave of passionate students poured into the facility, eager to discover what a path to a Private Pilot License (PPL) or Commercial Pilot License (CPL) looks like.
Our professional instructors spent the day diving into one-on-one sessions with people from all walks of life. No question was off-limits. From dissecting the current aviation job market to breaking down technical pre-flight inspection checklists on our pristine Robinson R44 fleet, the hangar was buzzing with knowledge sharing.
Taking the Controls: Introductory Flights
For many, the highlight of the day was transitioning from the hangar floor straight into the cockpit. We offered exclusive Introductory Flights throughout the day, giving numerous guests the life-changing opportunity to take the controls. With a qualified Helivate instructor safely guiding them every second of the way, these fresh flyers experienced the unmatched freedom of helicopter flight over the beautiful Winelands terrain.
Judging by the smiles on the apron, a brand-new generation of pilots has just found their wings!
